The HEDIS Learning Collaborative was a pilot effort where NCQA worked with a group of health plans to report Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®1) measures using data from electronic clinical data systems (ECDS). Participating plans in the HEDIS Learning Collaborative reported on three depression care measures using the ECDS methodology.

Dr. Mary Barton, Vice President of Performance Measurement at NCQA moderated the discussion that included panelists from two of the participating health plans who discussed their experience collecting clinical data to report depression measures. Nicole Johnson, Director of Performance Outcomes at CareSource in Dayton, Ohio, shared their challenges and successes in using data from a plan-run case management program to report the depression measures. She described how CareSource is trying to leverage other clinical data to enhance not just quality reports but more importantly, population management for their members. Natalia Diaz joined us from her office in Puerto Rico. She’s the Quality Analytics Manager with Triple-S Advantage, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Puerto Rico. Natalia spoke about their challenges in trying to leverage data from multiple sources and integrate it for reporting at the health plan level. Specifically, she noted that when data, such as depression screening results, are not captured in structured fields, it can be difficult to capture results at the plan level.

The google hangout was live-streamed allowing the audience to ask questions to Dr. Barton and the panelists. A recording of the hangout is available here: https://youtu.be/1OZOfOeE5G8. NCQA encourages anyone who is interested to learn more about ECDS to contact us at ECDS@ncqa.org.
